A Review: Bourjois Velvet The Lipstick

September 11, 2017

While on the train travelling back from a few days training in Liverpool (blog coming soon on this!) I received a very exciting email from Influenster informing me that I'd been chosen to receive the Bourjois VoxBox! That meant I'd be sent all 12 shades of their new lipstick collection free to test out! I was over the moon! I already loved Bourjois as a brand, especially their rouge edition lipsticks which I carry in my kit already, 'Rose Tweed' being a particularly popular choice for brides. So I was excited to try out their new collection of Rouge Velvet lipsticks.

A few days later I came home to my Bourjois packaging waiting for me outside my door. This is what it contained.....

All 12 shades of the new collection and their invisible lip liner.

My first thought was how well packaged they were, I much prefer the new style of these lipsticks to the normal rouge edition. The coloured outside is a lot more eye catching than the black. The second thing I noticed when opening was the teardrop shape, I'd never used a lipstick this shape before so was excited to try it out, somehow it seemed less intimidating than the usual pointed shape.

I swatches all 12 shades on my arms to see the colour ranges.

The colours which immediately cause my eye were 02, 05, 07 & 11.

Although I'm all for a good pink lipstick I wish they had a couple more nude shades instead of so many pinks as some of them are very similar. The nude included is a little too brown for my colouring and really didn't suit me but I think on someone with warmer undertones it could look really nice, same for 12 a chocolate brown colour which I loved the idea of but just didn't suit me.

The first colour I tried was 02 a dusty pink toned lipstick which I knew would suit my colouring. The application was so smooth and easy with the teardrop shape, especially round my cupid's bow where I always struggle with a pointed lipstick. The formula feels really creamy and buttery, it doesn't drag at all like some matte lipsticks I've used. It does have an unusual smell, almost like metal but this quickly goes after you've had it on for a few minutes.

To see how the lipstick wore throughout the day I took photos every 4 hours. During this time I didn't reapply and ate and drank as normal.

You can see in the first photo when first applied it does have a satin look but it dries after a few minutes to a more matte, 'velvet' feel.

I was really impressed with the wear of the lipstick, the colour had only slightly come off in the middle of my lips at the end of the day, probably from eating, but overall the staying power is impressive. My lips were a little dry after 8 hours but nothing compared to a liquid lipstick which sometimes leaves your lips feeling like this....

Next I tried one of the darker colours, no 10 which was a plum berry toned colour, great for autumn. I usually avoid dark lip colours as I find them too high maintenance to keep touching up but wanted to see how it wore.

It applied the same as the other colour but I had to touch up after a couple of hours as after a few drinks it faded in the centre so I ended up with butt hole lips. It does layer nicely though over the top, no flaking. After a few bites of food I also found it imprinted on my chin, something I didn't noticed with 02 but this is a common problem for me as I have quite a big bottom lip. Other than a few touch ups I did get a lot of compliments on the colour. I'd maybe just keep the darker colours to times where I'm not going to be eating to avoid chin print. #firstworldproblems

I'm still working my way through the shades but overall I'm really loving the application and formula of these. I'd definitely recommend them, especially for such a good price point. You can pick them up instore at Boots & Superdrug or purchase online here:
